Foreword
This second edition of How to Build Modern Furniture combines in one volume all of the really useful instructions and diagrams for woodworking, cabinet making, and furniture hardware that have made the two volumes of the first edition so popular. A very few details of restricted commercial interest have been eliminated, and a number of new developments in technique and hardware have been added. To increase the usefulness of the book, the material has been reorganized in more logical and convenient form, the text has been set in more legible type, lists of materials and instructions are presented in tabular form, and a complete index has been provided.
Among the 53 furniture designs are some classic pieces carried over from the first edition, but 36 completely new designs are presented, including cabinets for high fidelity radio-phonograph equipment. In addition, many of the designs from the first edition are shown with new variations.
Although the pieces have been planned for the home craftsman using the simplest joinery methods, furniture building is a skill which must grow with practice as well as study, and beginners will need to be cautioned to begin modestly. Advanced workers may substitute more difficult joints and details, adapt plans to their own dimensions, or develop their own designs using the construction details provided.
Whatever their skills or requirements, it is hoped that furniture builders will find this book useful for reference and inspiration as well as for direct application.
